Area rugs: size, pile, fibre, and whether it washes
A rug is the largest thing in a living room after the sofa and the easiest to buy wrong. The specification sheet has four lines that matter — size, pile height, fibre, backing — and the first of them is the one most people get wrong.
What the category is
Rugs by construction: machine-woven synthetics (polypropylene, polyester, nylon), hand- or machine-tufted, flatweave, shag, and natural fibres (wool, jute, sisal, cotton). Washable rugs are a thin pile bonded to a separate non-slip pad so the top goes in a washing machine. Sizes run from 2 by 3 to 9 by 12 and beyond, with runners for halls. Pattern and colour are the reason most rugs are chosen; size and pile are the reason most are returned.
How to read the spec sheet
Size in feet, and the rule it should meet: at least the front legs of every seat on the rug, and ideally all legs of the sofa and chairs. For a room with a three-seater and two chairs that is an 8 by 10, not a 5 by 8. Nominal sizes run short by an inch or two, and a review notes when the sheet gives exact dimensions.
Pile height in inches: under 0.25 is low and flat, sits under doors and tables, and shows dirt least; 0.5 to 1 is plush; over 1 is shag, which is soft and traps everything. Furniture on a thick pile wobbles.
Fibre: polypropylene is cheap, stain-resistant and flattens; polyester is soft and sheds; nylon is durable; wool is warm, resilient and dear; jute and sisal are hard-wearing and rough underfoot. The sheet names the fibre and the percentage where blended.
Backing: latex or rubber backing grips and can mark some floors; a jute or cotton backing needs a rug pad; a washable rug’s pad is separate and listed.
Washable: a machine-washable claim names a machine size the rug fits in. An 8 by 10 that “fits a home washer” often means a commercial one.
Weight is a proxy for density: two 5 by 8 rugs of the same fibre at 8 and 16 pounds are not the same rug.
Who it suits
A low-pile synthetic for a family room, a hallway or a house with pets; a washable rug for a house with children; wool for a room that will keep it for a decade; jute for a hard-wearing, textured floor where no one sits on the floor; shag for a bedroom rather than a living room, whatever the listing says.
Who should skip it
Anyone buying a 5 by 8 for a full seating group: it will float in the middle and make the room look smaller. Anyone with a thick pile and a coffee table with thin legs.
